What to Expect During Your Ultrasound?

Ultrasound imaging is an essential part of prenatal care, helping providers monitor fetal development and ensure the health of both mother and baby. At Garden OB/GYN, we offer advanced ultrasound services to give you a clear picture of your pregnancy journey.

What is Obstetric Ultrasonography?

Obstetric ultrasonography is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique used during pregnancy to examine the developing fetus, assess placental health, and detect any potential concerns. It uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the baby and reproductive organs.

There are two main types of obstetric ultrasounds:

1. Transabdominal Ultrasound

This is the most common type of ultrasound, performed externally over the abdomen. During the scan:

  • A warm, clear gel is applied to your lower belly.
  • A handheld device called a transducer glides over the skin to capture images.
  • The procedure is painless and provides real-time images of your baby’s development.

2. Transvaginal Ultrasound

For a more detailed view, a transvaginal ultrasound may be performed, either alone or alongside a transabdominal scan. This method is used especially in early pregnancy or when a more precise image of the pelvic organs is needed. During the scan:

  • A small, sterilized transducer probe is inserted into the vagina.
  • The probe is rotated gently to capture images of the uterus, cervix, and fetus.
  • It is normal to feel slight pressure, but the procedure is quick and safe.

Why are Obstetric Ultrasounds Important?

Ultrasounds play a crucial role in:

  • Confirming pregnancy and checking fetal viability
  • Determining gestational age and estimated due date
  • Monitoring fetal growth and development
  • Checking for multiple pregnancies (twins, triplets, etc.)
  • Assessing the placenta, amniotic fluid, and overall pregnancy health

Our experienced team at Garden OB/GYN provides comprehensive prenatal ultrasound services in a comfortable and professional setting. Whether it’s your first ultrasound or a routine scan, we are here to ensure the health of you and your baby.
